Thanks for starting a new thread, admin. For those who want to see the later comments in the older thread, just click on the date of the old thread (7/31/2011 5:00:00) and it will let you click to get to the later comments (or at least it does on my browser).
You can get the same result by adding "&page=2" or "&page=3" (etc.) to the end of the URL of the old thread; that should work in any browser.
This may have been lost in the chaos of the last thread, so I'll re-post:
For those still looking for employment next year, there is a visiting position advertised on higheredjobs at Western Missouri that might be suitable for some theorists (primary fields are theory/american/policy)
SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN POLITICAL SCIENCE
This seems like a potentially appealing opportunity for anyone who studies Caribbean political thought. (I'm trying to think of a way to stretch my Fanon chapter here, but it's probably a lost cause...)
Applicants must have a PhD in Political Science with a specialization in Caribbean Political Thought and Caribbean Politics. The ideal candidate should be able to teach courses addressing the politics of nationhood, identity, colonialism and postcolonialism, development and underdevelopment in the Caribbean. He/she should be grounded in Caribbean political thought, Caribbean political culture and institutions. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to deliver course offerings in African politics. Applicants must also possess a demonstrated record of high quality teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, a significant record of achievement in independent research and success in attracting research funding.
Excellent communication skills are essential, as is a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, service and technology application in the classroom. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in helping students and the ability to work effectively as a member of a team. Experience in developing and delivering programmes and courses by distance or online at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels will be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, take part in curriculum development, be involved in interdisciplinary collaboration, develop innovative research and advise and supervise students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The successful candidates will also be expected to make a significant contribution to the department's research output, to undertake an appropriate teaching and administrative load, and to take part in outreach activities.
Applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae (inclusive of a statement on teaching and research interests) giving full particulars of qualifications, experience, the names and addresses of three (3) referees (one of whom should be from your present organization) and copies of academic qualifications. These should be sent by electronic mail to hrmd.sed@uwimona.edu.jm or by post to the Director, Human Resource Management Division, The University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica, West Indies. The final date for receipt of applications is February 24, 2012. For further information on the Department of Government, please click on: http://myspot.mona.uwi.edu/government
Wish I was qualified for that one. Looks like an interesting place to be. Also, I wish I knew Caribbean political thought, since I have no idea what that would involve! Too ignorant, I (and I).
Any news on the University of Dallas search?
Has anyone heard from South Carolina?
I got a rejection letter from South Carolina a while ago...does that count?
That counts. How long is a while ago?
that's weird - the South Carolina deadline was only 3 weeks ago - a bit quick for rejections, no? Unless they were rejecting on a rolling basis and you sent in an early application ...
6:52 here, my mistake. I got SC mixed up with another school in my mind. I have not (yet) received a rejection from that fine institution.
Keeping all this rejection straight is hard work!
I received two email rejections last week from places I forgot I applied to. Luckily I quickly became numb to rejections - I scan the letter, delete it immediately, and instantly re-forget that I applied for them.
Yes. But I like to do the added step of updating my job app spreadsheet. I find that formalizes the rejection nicely.
you don't have collage of rejection letters on your walls for your spouse to admire?
I tried that for a while. But she put up a list of guys who turned her down before I accepted the offer. It was a long, long list, which is depressing in at least two ways...
Middlebury has finished interviews for their VAP. They should have a decision out in the next week or so.
Source: a prof who has a student who interviewed with them.
Has anyone heard about the 2nd round for the Chicago Harper Schmidt fellowships?
I have just learned that the University of South Carolina is sending out their inquiries if the candidates that they are interested in are still available. So they are moving now
About the Chicago Harper-Schmidt fellowship: the administrator will send emails to people on the short list later today.
i am still available.
Alex Livingston to Cornell. Congratulations, Alex!
Here here - congrats to Alex! A good man and a better DJ.
Splendid! Congratulations, Alex
Jason Franks' mini-me?
^That's uncanny. How many other departments can boast TWO profs with receding hairlines, beards, and hipster glasses?
Well the Gilded Age was a good choice anyway. The rest of it: pfffft!
If you toss in philosophy departments, plenty.
Who wound up getting the Delaware job?
^A while ago there was a rumor that Brandon Terry had offers from Cornell, Amherst, and Delaware (I think). Since others have been identified as taking the Cornell and Amherst jobs, does this mean that Terry took the Delaware job? Or has he had other, unreported offers?
^ unreported offers.
Terry has more offers than you could even begin to imagine
Who's been identified as taking the Amherst job?
Delaware hired an abd from Cornell. Sorry I don't remember his name.
Has anyone been contacted by the Political Theory Project yet? The rumor on the post-doc wiki was that a shortlist would be formed at the end of January/beginning of February. Have they moved yet?

^ Jesus Christ. Can be please get this vile racism deleted, moderator?
I don't like it any more than you do, but criticizing affirmative action on the grounds that people whose work you don't respect do well on the job market isn't racist. A misplaced criticism, maybe, but not racist.
Uh, when it's racist criticism, it's racism.
^^ It should be deleted not because it's "criticizing affirmative action" but because it's trashing an individual's work, which is (or used to be) verboten.
1:13pm should be censored for using language ("Jesus Christ") derived from a comprehensive doctrine.
Dude, if I had a nickel for every time a bunch of political science departments bandwagoned to hire some mediocre white boy because his Famous Advisor said he was the greatest thing since sliced Wonderbread, I'd be Mitt freaking Romney. This isn't a pure meritocracy and it never was.
^ two wrongs don't make a right, bro
--Socrates (probably)
^True, but it's telling if you only complain about what kind of wrong.
"Uh, when it's racist criticism, it's racism."
When it's a tautological claim, it's a tautology.
Does anyone know about the status of the Brock search?
Dude, if I had a nickel for every time a bunch of political science departments bandwagoned to hire some mediocre white boy because his Famous Advisor said he was the greatest thing since sliced Wonderbread, I'd be Mitt freaking Romney. This isn't a pure meritocracy and it never was.
--This is correct and tells me that Affirmative Action is as morally bankrupt a practice as is the "old boy" network. Neither should be viewed as superior to the other; each should be viewed as a group of selfish individuals exploiting fairness and decency for their own ends.
take it elsewhere. please.
meanwhile, what "brock search?"
methinks i haven't been keeping up with some of the alternate listing sites as well as i should have been ...
There's a TT search at Brock University (St. Catharine's, Ontario). Focus: Ancient Political Thought. Deadline for applications was late December, I think.
I suppose I'm willing to concede that criticism of affirmative action is not necessarily racist. In theory (and maybe somewhere at some point in time, in practice--it's a big world out there) an argument against affirmative action that does not draw on or allude to racist narratives or further racist ends could plausibly exist.
This hypothetical possibility aside, it clearly has nothing to do with 12:46, which could hardly be more straightforward and clear in its racist content and intent. Attempting to tarnish a young, untenured scholar's reputation in a content-free attack, in an anonymous forum (thus not taking responsibility for the attack) is a racist goal, obviously.
fine.
now please shut up.
Oh, but now 8:10 can sleep knowing he's set the world aright once more. No need to hush him up for his herculean efforts.

Troll, I give you 6/10. You've succeeded in irritating some people, as was your intention, so minor props for that. But you need to step your game up if you want to make it to the Troll Major League.

OK, first, the idea that affirmative action is a way to get more lefties hired in *political theory* is risible. All the evidence suggests that lefties are doing just fine on their own.
Second, you can't be in favor of affirmative action and then call it racist when someone suggests that a minority candidate was hired because they were a minority. That's what affirmative action is.
You might say that minority candidates face more obstacles on the way up than non-minority candidates, so it's just that they get a boost at the end, but you can't say that they don't get a boost. And the "facing more obstacles" argument sometimes breaks down when you look at individual cases.

Moderator, please delete this discussion.
If you're not going to attach your name to this kind of rank bigotry, you shouldn't be given a platform. This effort to damage the reputation of an untenured member of our profession is vile and unconscionable.
Out of curiosity--does anyone know if WSU is hiring to replace Matt W. (and if so, where he's going) or if it's a growth position for this new ethics & public affairs program?
Look, I'm just pointing out that logically speaking you can't argue that members of certain groups should get preferential treatment in hiring and then call it "rank bigotry" when someone suggests that a member of one of those groups got preferential treatment in hiring. That's not an argument for or against preferential treatment, or a comment on the merits of any particular individual, it's just a point about logical consistency.
^ It's reasonable to make that observation generally, but to wield it against a particular individual, while denigrating their work, it an argument that serves a racist end. I don't see how this could be any more obvious. The goal of the poster is to call into question the quality and the worth of African-Americans in his profession. The existence of preference in hiring is merely a handy pretext for the goal. Otherwise, why a) personalize your compliant about the policy by focusing on one individual and b) include a gratuitous swipe at the quality of this person's work.
12:46 is obviously racist. If you want to criticize AA policies in a non-racist way, the first rule is to not use that criticism to attack and denigrate the professional value of a particular individual.

Oh how I wish you could edit posts on this thing...
All the references to the junior person have been deleted. I've left the other comments up for now so that the comment stream is more readable (I may go back and delete it once we add more comments to this thread b/c it is off-topic), but I will delete any further attempts to continue the AA discussion.
^^ fair enough, I can't speak for 12:46 but I didn't mean to denigrate the individual mentioned above or anyone else. I've never met him or seen/read any of his work, and so have no basis for judgment one way or another.
Thanks, mod.

Feb 11 @ 3:38:
I heard that Matt W. is leaving for another position from what I gather. So, the position looks like a replacement. Given rumors on the other blog about wsu, I would doubt that that department is growing.
what rumors on what other blog?
It's not my intention to derail the thread, but I wanted to ask you guys something. I have a BA in PolSci and a MA in Philosophy. I will shortly begin my PhD studies in Philosophy and focus on modern Political Philosophy. Do you think I'll have a shot at Political Theory jobs once I'm finished? What would you advice me to do to improve my chances? Thanks!
It is your intention to derail this thread. This is a thread about junior jobs. Post your question in the general thread, grad cafe, or on PSJR.
Oops, wrong tab. Sorry about that!
Does anyone know anything about the jobs at Westfield St. or the Wisconsin jobs (the ones that aren't UW Madison)?
Brandon Terry turns down Yale for Chicago.
Good for him.
Easy choice really. Where would you rather be? I'm sure that Yale offered more money but which senior faculty would you rather be junior faculty under. Duh.
i got a reject from UWWhitewater. and, i think, UWEauClaire (public law), although i may just have imagined that second one.
UWLaCrosse is presumably still in process ... deadline was just 2 weeks ago.
Given Terry's interests it makes sense, and it's good not to stay at your home institution for your first job. But I sure don't find the answer to 1:45's rhetorical question as easy as s/he seems to.
Um, I think that S. Smith, Benhabib and Shapiro are all notoriously difficult to work with.
Chicago has a pretty agreeable senior group.

^ please just grow up.
Wait, Chicago was hiring this year? How did I miss that?
Yeah, I didn't think either Yale or Chicago were hiring this year.
Maybe this is all just trolling?
We'll find out soon enough. (About Chicago at least)
Chicago advertised in REP, not PT.

charming.
I'd already thought that Chicago was better than Harvard and Princeton, but this confirms it.

Political Theory Post-Doc: American University
http://www.jackmillercenter.org/2012/02/political-theory-post-doc-american-university/
Yeah, notwithstanding the "hotness" debate, I'm going to Chicago next year, even if I get into Yale.
Haven't Yale's placements been better?
10 pm: what is REP?
Race, Ethnicity, & Politics
That's fantastic news; the hottest commodity on the theory market takes a non-theory job. More jobs to go around!
>Haven't Yale's placements been better?
What makes you say that?
And Yale's such a miserable place for grad students and junior faculty.
Even though its not in the political theory field, the recent sexual harassment issues there don't make the place any more attractive.....
^ This characterization of Yale, which is popular at PSJR, is (like so much of what you read there) nonsense. It's a pleasant and collegial place. And while the big three of Smith/Shapiro/Benhabib generally don't mix well on committees, they are all excellent advisors who support and train their students as well as anyone in political theory today. Whatever personal disagreements they have don't really show themselves in any way that graduate students would notice. The person who has been accused of sexual harrassment has nothing to do with political theory, and is pretty overblown in any case.
It's a great place to study political theory, and it's not a coincidence their placements have been as strong as anyone's recently. This bizarre narrative about Yale being unpleasant or dysfunctional has not basis in reality whatsoever.
If you're admitted to Yale, go visit before you accept their offer.
Students who visit and and have other options, overwhelmingly go elsewhere....
Students who visit and and have other options, overwhelmingly go elsewhere
Again, nonsense. Virtually everyone admitted to Yale has also received admittance from at least one other top tier program. And yet they get an excellent group of students of students. While it's somewhat rare for people who were admitted to Harvard to matriculate at Yale, the current students include those who were admitted with full funding to just about every other top program.
I'm not sure *why* someone is trying to spread this silly narrative about Yale but, again, it has no basis in fact.
Its a fact that 3 years ago, ALL of the theorists who were admitted to Yale went elsewhere after visiting. All of them. Last year they admitted 11 theorists just to insure that the might get 2 or 3....
Please take the more general discussion of programs either to the prospective grad student area or to the general discussion area. Thanks.
UW LaCrosse is asking for further info from some people.

Dear Mod,
There are occasional instances of these comments that maybe you should keep, just so some people can look back on 11:46 and never again claim there's no racism in political theory.
This is freaking terrible. You people are such racist assholes.
Congrats, Brandon on such a great start to your career!
Christopher Lebron and wife (Vesla Weaver, Americanist) leaving University of Virginia for Yale.
11.46, 2.44, and 9.21:
I bet each of you makes charming dinner party company.
Seriously, each of you illustrate why my wife refuses to socialize with political scientists and why APSA is such a self-important loser fest.
There's room for disagreement about affirmative action. But here's one thing I wonder. Why is it that whenever a white candidate gets a job, no one ever says, "Well, we shouldn't give him too much credit. He's never had to face systematic underestimation of his abilities, or regularly been made to feel a stranger in the land of his birth. Let's not sing his praises, people, with those kinds of thumbs on the scale"? And if you believe anti-black and anti-brown discrimination don't occur anymore, please read Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan, “Are Emily and Greg More Employable Than Lakisha and Jamal? A Field Experiment on Labor Market Discrimination,” American Economic Review 94, no. 4 (2004): 991–1013.

Ghastly comment and some OTish stuff deleted. I may prune some other stuff that is a bit OT later, but I'm trying to prevent this comment thread from being one giant repetition of "This comment has been removed by a blog administrator." To that end, it would be awesome if the troll(s) would stop posting racist and sexist crap. TIA.
10.53,
Logic fail. (and: dont we do precisely that when anyone gets multiple good offers?)
i appreciate the new general discussion thread as an attempt to shift this annoying debate over there.
but it appears that's not enough.
maybe a thread entitled: "rehashing the debates you should have settled in the dorm hallway during freshman year."
Admin, if you press "delete this comment forever" it won't leave the "this comment has been deleted" trail.
Administrator:
Please don't pay attention to the last poster.
Do leave the track of the deleted mails. If you take out the "this comment deleted" message, things truly make no sense.

Middlebury has extended an offer to a Ph.D. from Duke.
Does anyone know who has been shortlisted for Brock Political Theory post?
4:24, why are you asking for info that violates the explicit norms of the rumor mill? Names are post-offer only.
Westfield State University and the University of South Carolina have scheduled campus interviews, which will take place next month.
How about: does anyone know if anyone has been shortlisted for the Brown postdoc?
Middlebury offer must be to Keegan Callanan.
Proof: Google his name and Middlebury and you'll see he had interview with them.
^^Brown has emailed/is emailing finalists.
Cal State Long Beach has made an offer for its TT job.
